Woman released on bail after fatal house fire

A woman in her 30s was detained on Saturday following a fire in Wolverhampton that claimed the lives of two young boys. Emergency services responded to the blaze in Mason Street at approximately 20:30 BST on Friday. Firefighters entered the property and rescued the children, though two boys, aged one and three, died at the scene.

Before the arrival of emergency crews, two more children and a woman had already left the house. They were examined by ambulance staff but did not require hospital care. The suspect was arrested after the incident, but has since been released on police bail.

“Our thoughts remain very much with those who loved the children who have been lost,” said Det Ch Insp Kylie Westlake. “We understand the shock and distress this awful incident will have caused to many people and we are working at pace to ascertain exactly what has happened. While we would ask people not to speculate about this or the wider incident, we would ask that anyone who can help with our enquiries, and who is yet to speak with us, to get in contact.”
