Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa to receive honorary doctorate

Doctor Who Star Ncuti Gatwa Honored with Honorary Degree

The University of Glasgow is set to confer honorary degrees to a diverse group of individuals later this year, including Ncuti Gatwa, the actor who portrayed the Doctor in the long-running science fiction series. Alongside him, Stuart Murdoch, the lead singer of the band Belle & Sebastian, will also be awarded an honorary title. The ceremony, scheduled for June, will celebrate several recipients, among them BBC journalist Sarah Smith and her younger sibling, Baroness Catherine Smith, who serves as the Advocate General for Scotland.

Event Marks University’s 575th Anniversary

The special Commemoration Day ceremony will occur on Wednesday, 17 June, coinciding with the 575th anniversary of the university’s founding in 1451. Other notable honorees include musicians Deacon Blue and Eddi Reader, whose contributions to the arts will be acknowledged. Gatwa, who completed two seasons as the Doctor, will be bestowed a Doctor of the University title, as will Sarah Smith, the BBC’s North America editor.

“Honorary degrees allow us to reflect on our remarkable history,” said Prof Andy Schofield, the principal and vice chancellor of the university. He further noted: “These individuals represent achievements that have left a profound and positive impact within their professions and wider society. Their work embodies values that continue to inspire our community. I am delighted to welcome our honorary graduates into the University of Glasgow community at such a significant milestone, and to celebrate them alongside our graduating students.”

Baroness Catherine Smith, a graduate of the University of Glasgow with a history degree, will receive the same honor as her sister. Additionally, Jacqueline McLaren, the current Lord Provost of Glasgow, will be honored with a Doctor of the University title. The ceremony will also include the awarding of a Doctor of Music to Stuart Murdoch, recognizing his longstanding role with Belle & Sebastian since the 1990s.
