Briton’s Iran jail sentence extended by two years, family says
British Couple’s Iran Detention Deepens as Sentence Extension Confirmed
Briton s Iran jail sentence extended – Craig and Lindsay Foreman, a British couple from East Sussex who were imprisoned in Iran on espionage charges, are facing further complications after Craig’s prison term was extended by an additional two years. According to family sources, the extension was imposed while the couple was already serving a decade-long sentence that was handed down in February.
The pair were originally apprehended in January 2025 while undertaking a motorcycle expedition that would have taken them from Europe all the way to Australia. Both have consistently maintained their innocence regarding the spying allegations that led to their arrest.
Secret Sentence Extension Without Legal Representation
Relatives of Craig Foreman revealed that the extension was communicated to him while he was incarcerated at Tehran’s Evin prison. The punishment was reportedly triggered by his decision to speak with journalists from his cell. However, the manner in which the extension was delivered has drawn particular criticism from the family.
Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman’s son and a spokesperson for the family, explained: “We understand he was told he was being taken to see his lawyer but was instead brought before a judge and informed of the additional sentence.”
Bennett, who resides in Folkestone, Kent, emphasized that his step-father was denied basic legal protections during this process. “He was allowed no lawyer, no translator and no opportunity to defend himself,” Bennett stated, highlighting what the family considers a fundamental violation of due process.
Health Concerns Mount as Hunger Strike Continues
The couple has been maintaining a hunger strike since May, when Iranian prison officials prevented them from contacting their families. This action has prompted growing anxiety among relatives about their wellbeing.
HRANA, a human rights organization based in the United States, recently reported that Craig Foreman has lost approximately 16 kilograms, equivalent to 35 pounds. Meanwhile, Lindsay Foreman is reportedly experiencing dizziness and body tremors as a result of the prolonged fast.
Compounding these health issues, the family has learned that a letter requesting the couple to terminate their hunger strike was never delivered. Additionally, essential medication and basic supplies have failed to reach them during this difficult period.
“My mum and Craig are 18 months into an ordeal they should never have known,” Bennett remarked. “They are weak, they are hungry, and now Craig is being punished simply for being heard.”
International Response and Diplomatic Efforts
United Nations human rights experts have publicly urged Iran to release the couple, citing serious irregularities in their legal proceedings. Dr Alice Edwards and Mai Sato, serving as UN special rapporteurs, stated that the Foremans appear to have been wrongfully detained and prosecuted on questionable grounds.
“Lindsay and Craig Foreman should not be in prison,” the rapporteurs declared. “They appear to have been wrongfully detained, prosecuted on highly questionable grounds, and sentenced after proceedings that failed to meet basic fair trial guarantees.”
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has maintained that it is urgently following up with Iranian authorities regarding the reported sentence increase. The department has previously advised against all travel to Iran since 2022, noting that individuals can be detained simply for holding a British passport or having connections to the United Kingdom.
Government officials have described the original ten-year sentences as “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable.” They have confirmed that consular support continues to be provided to the couple and have communicated to Iran that, if verified, the sentence extension would be unacceptable.
New Envoy Appointment Brings Hope
The family has welcomed the recent appointment of Alistair Burt, a former Conservative MP and Middle East minister, as the UK’s first-ever envoy dedicated to supporting British nationals detained abroad in complex cases involving welfare, due process, or human rights concerns.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman’s family expressed optimism about meeting the new envoy and indicated that they hope his appointment will positively influence their case. Bennett concluded by emphasizing the severity of what he described as a flagrant abuse of basic rights, noting that adding two years to an innocent man’s sentence in secret, without any opportunity for defense, represents a profound injustice.
The family continues to appeal to Iranian authorities to show mercy and grant the couple their freedom, while maintaining that public support for the imprisoned couple remains “phenomenal” according to recent reports.
