England’s Hamilton wins first European Tour title

Esme Hamilton Secures Maiden European Tour Victory at South African Open

In a decisive final round at the 2024 South African Women’s Open, Esme Hamilton claimed her first European Tour title after a resilient performance. The 26-year-old managed to outlast competition from fellow Englishwoman Cara Gainer, securing a two-shot margin over the second-place finisher.

Final Round Scores

Hamilton entered the final stage tied with Slovenia’s Pia Babnik, who carded a -12 score. Gainer, also from England, finished at -13, while other notable performances included A Morgan (US) and B Navarrosa (US) at -9, and E Spitz (Aut) at -7. Additional contenders were A Fuller (Eng) at -6, A Foster (Ire) and A Hewson (Eng) at -5, and M MacLaren (Eng) and H Screen (Eng) at -4.

Hamilton faced early struggles, adding a bogey on the third hole and a double bogey on the ninth. However, she steadied her game in the closing stages, finishing with a two-under-par 71 to clinch the victory. This marks her first European Tour win, achieved on the 22nd attempt.

Before this breakthrough, Hamilton had recorded only two top-10 finishes in prior tournaments. Gainer, who started the final day in third place, fell short with a one-under 72, finishing three strokes behind the winner.

Bernd Wiesberger’s Triumph

Meanwhile, Bernd Wiesberger ended a five-year drought in DP World Tour competition by capturing the China Open in Shanghai. The 40-year-old Austrian secured a commanding 19-under total, finishing three shots ahead of Adrian Otaegui in second place.
