Claudia Winkleman Quits Chat Show After One Series
Claudia Winkleman quits chat show after just one series, the BBC has confirmed. The beloved television presenter has officially stepped away from the programme she launched earlier this year, marking the end of her first attempt at hosting a dedicated talk show. Winkleman, who previously left Strictly Come Dancing last year and currently presents The Traitors, fronted seven episodes of the series produced by Graham Norton’s production company. In a heartfelt statement, she expressed her gratitude while explaining that nerves had prevented her from fully enjoying the experience.
Guests and Reception
During the seven-week spring run, Winkleman welcomed a diverse array of high-profile guests to her sofa. Notable appearances included Lisa Kudrow, Jeff Goldblum, Niall Horan, and Rachel Zegler. Other distinguished visitors featured Ralph Fiennes, James McAvoy, Jamie Dornan, Vanessa Williams, and incoming Strictly co-host Josh Widdicombe. The series drew between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers per episode on average, though critical response was mixed. Some reviewers praised the programme as entertaining and full of banter, while others found it messy and occasionally dull.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent. Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it.”
Winkleman’s chat show was produced by So Television, the company co-founded by Graham Norton that also produces his own talk series. In 2022, Norton reduced his episode output, dropping the spring run in favour of a shorter autumn and winter series. This scheduling change created an opening for Winkleman’s programme to launch in the same Friday night BBC One slot during the spring months.
Norton’s show typically attracts between 2.5 million and 3 million viewers, with special episodes like the New Year’s Eve broadcast reaching up to 4 million. Beyond traditional television, millions more engage with talk show content through YouTube and social media platforms. Ed Havard, the BBC’s director of entertainment, praised Winkleman’s contribution: “Claudia’s warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy.”
“Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision and would like to thank Claudia and the brilliant team at So Television for bringing the series to screen on the BBC. As the host of the country’s most-watched show, Claudia will be back on the BBC very soon when The Celebrity Traitors returns later this year.”
While Claudia Winkleman quits chat show after this initial attempt, she has indicated openness to returning in the future. “Maybe one day I will give it another try,” she said, noting that she already holds what she considers the best jobs in television. With The Celebrity Traitors returning later this year, audiences can expect to see Winkleman continue her successful television career on the BBC for many years to come.
