Missing 5-Year-Old Girl Likely Abducted from Outback Home, Police Say

Australian authorities suspect a five-year-old girl who vanished in the Outback may have been taken against her will, prompting a search for Jefferson Lewis, a 47-year-old man recently released from prison. Sharon, the child identified by officials, was last spotted on Saturday evening as she was being tucked into bed at an Aboriginal town camp in Alice Springs, just before midnight.

Northern Territory Police Acting Commander Mark Grieve emphasized the urgency of the case, stating that investigators are seeking Lewis, who was staying at the camp and disappeared around the same time. “It’s a terrible situation to have such a young child go missing,” Grieve said, adding that over 24 hours had passed since Sharon’s disappearance, making it “my worst nightmare as a parent.”

“We want to find Sharon healthy and get her back to her family,” Grieve said.

Details of Sharon’s last known appearance include her wearing a dark blue T-shirt with a white ring around the neck and sleeves, along with black boxer-style underwear. Lewis, who has a history of domestic and family violence-related offences, remains one of the few individuals present at the camp during the incident who has not contacted police or been located.

Search efforts have expanded across the area surrounding the camp, a government-designated space for Aboriginal residents in Alice Springs. Teams have deployed the dog squad, a drone unit, and a helicopter to scour nearby bush and desert terrain. Officers and volunteers continue the operation, urging anyone with relevant information to reach out to authorities.
