German doctor jailed for murder of 15 patients and suspected of more
German Palliative Care Physician Receives Life Sentence for Patient Murders
A Tragedy Unfolds in Berlin
German doctor jailed for murder of 15 – A German medical professional has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of taking the lives of fifteen patients under his care. The court in Berlin delivered its verdict against the 41-year-old physician, who is identified only as Johannes M. according to German privacy legislation. The convictions cover the deaths of twelve female patients and three male patients, spanning a period from September 2021 through July 2024.
Authorities have indicated that these confirmed murders may represent only a fraction of the doctor’s alleged crimes. Prosecutors are actively examining dozens of additional incidents that could be connected to the physician’s actions. The victims in this case ranged widely in age, from a young woman of twenty-five to an elderly patient of ninety-four years old.
The Method Behind the Murders
During the trial proceedings, the court learned that all the victims were suffering from serious illnesses, yet their deaths were not considered inevitable. Prosecutors presented evidence showing that during home visits, the physician administered potentially fatal combinations of medications without obtaining proper consent from his patients. In multiple instances, investigators discovered that the doctor deliberately started fires at the victims’ residences in an attempt to destroy evidence and conceal his actions.
One particularly notable incident occurred in July 2024, just days before the physician’s arrest. Prosecutors revealed that on a single day, the doctor killed two patients: a seventy-five-year-old man at his home in central Berlin, followed a few hours later by a seventy-six-year-old woman in an adjacent district. When attempting to set fire to the elderly woman’s house to cover her death, the physician was unsuccessful in his efforts.
Confession and Victim Impact
Throughout the lengthy trial, which extended for approximately twelve months, the doctor remained largely silent. However, in a recent development, he admitted to having “killed people,” specifically acknowledging twelve of his severely ill patients. He explained to the court that he had convinced himself his actions were justified, as he was sparing them “suffering and infirmity.” Reflecting on his decisions, he stated, “Throughout it all, I thought this was the best thing for everyone.” He also offered an apology for the pain and distress he had inflicted upon families.
“She never said she didn’t want to live anymore,” said the mother of the youngest victim, a twenty-five-year-old woman who passed away in 2021, her voice breaking with emotion.
“My mother wanted to keep on living,” remarked the son of a seventy-two-year-old woman who died in 2024. He added that his mother had been making plans to visit the Baltic Sea with her sister.
Legal Consequences and Ongoing Investigation
The court determined that the doctor’s guilt was particularly severe in nature. In addition to the life sentence, the judge ordered that the physician be placed in preventive detention once he completes his prison term. Furthermore, a lifetime prohibition on practicing medicine was imposed upon him.
Prosecutors are currently reviewing seventy-six additional cases that may involve the doctor. According to German media reports, if these supplementary cases are substantiated and the physician is found guilty in each instance, this would rank among the most significant serial murder cases in German history. The doctor informed the court that he intends to “get involved much earlier in the forthcoming proceedings” as the investigation continues.
Relatives of the victims have expressed their ongoing shock and disbelief at the revelations. The mother of the youngest victim was moved to tears during her testimony, emphasizing that her daughter had never expressed any desire to end her life. Similarly, the son of the seventy-two-year-old victim highlighted his mother’s enthusiasm for life and her future plans, underscoring the tragedy of her untimely death.
