Amodei has raised the possibility of a large collection of bots functioning together with the power and coordination of a supercomputer, potentially enabling them to dominate parts of the internet. Coxon said such a development could be plausible within six months to a year.
That timeline reflects the unease among those who see AI progress as moving faster than the safeguards around it. Testing, internal policies and voluntary commitments may matter, but critics of the current trajectory argue that they may not be sufficient once systems become more capable and more independent.

Coxon said slowing research would be difficult because it would require coordinated action by the largest technology companies and would also need to take account of AI advances in China. No company wants to fall behind competitors, creating what he described as a race in which even people seeking caution may feel unable to pause.
“The people who work at these companies are completely serious when they ask for regulation because they find themselves trapped in a race. And they’re scared of the outcomes of that race.”
He said some employees are thinking seriously about humanity’s future over the next two years and are reconsidering their own lives in response to those fears. Even so, Coxon expressed optimism about the people doing the research, saying they genuinely want to find a safe path for the technology.
The argument now facing governments, companies and the public is whether safeguards can keep pace with AI’s rapidly expanding abilities. The answer may determine whether the technology becomes a powerful tool for human benefit, or a force that develops beyond society’s ability to manage it.
