NYPD Officer Dies in Medical Incident During Deployment to Kuwait in Iran Conflict
A New York City police officer passed away during a deployment to Kuwait as part of the U.S. military operation against Iran, announced by city and state authorities. The incident occurred at Camp Buehring, where Major Sorffly Davius succumbed to his injuries on Friday, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The governor highlighted Davius as a “true Citizen Soldier” and a committed family man, expressing condolences to his loved ones.
“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” said the NYPD. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
Davius had previously served in the U.S. Army National Guard, holding the rank of major within the 42nd Infantry Division. His career with the NYPD began in 2014, when he was assigned to the 79th Precinct. Hochul added that Davius was a decorated veteran who demonstrated excellence while stationed with Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a unit responsible for securing New York’s key sites.
“His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members, who balance their roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers,” the governor emphasized.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Davius in a statement released Saturday, noting that his career was “defined by service — to his country and to New York City.” NBC News has contacted the National Guard and U.S. Central Command for further details. The ongoing conflict has resulted in seven U.S. service members losing their lives, with six fatalities reported in Kuwait and one in Saudi Arabia.
U.S. Central Command confirmed that the seventh death occurred Saturday evening, following injuries sustained during a March 1 attack on troops in Saudi Arabia. Marlene Lenthang, a breaking news reporter for NBC News Digital, reported the update.
