Thinking of signing up to Metro’s Lifeline challenge? Here’s everything you need to know

A summer of purposeful steps

This summer, picture yourself strolling through the scenic Cotswold hills, with the breeze tousling your hair and sunlight warming your skin. Each stride you take will contribute to supporting individuals affected by dementia, turning personal effort into meaningful impact.

Your first step into the challenge

If you’re new to our innovative Lifeline challenges, you’re likely wondering about the details. We understand that uncertainty can arise when exploring this unique opportunity, so we’ve compiled essential information to guide you through the process.

Joining the cause

The Lifeline challenge will be held on June 13, 2026, beginning at the Royal Agricultural University in Circencester. This event brings together a diverse group of participants: Metro staff, Alzheimer’s Society volunteers, and readers like you. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a beginner, there’s room for all, and you can choose to walk alone or with companions, depending on what suits your schedule.

Choosing your distance

Participants can select from three options: 25km, 50km, or 100km (the latter is either completed in one go or spread over two days). Each distance has a set fundraising goal—£150 for 25km, £225 for 50km, and £330 for 100km. Rest assured, no one will be left to tackle the journey alone, as teams are balanced to include all levels of experience.

How to prepare

Before registering, consider your fitness level and the time you can dedicate to training. While the day of the event will test your limits, it’s crucial to feel confident about your ability to complete the chosen distance.

“We’ve seen it happen!”

This event is designed to push participants to their best, but preparation ensures a rewarding experience.

Fundraising tips

Registration starts at £15, but the amount you raise will determine your participation fee. For instance, choosing to fundraise £275 instead of £150 increases the cost to £46. At least 50% of your target should be met three weeks before the challenge, with the remaining amount due within four weeks of finishing. Alzheimer’s Society offers helpful fundraising advice and inspiration here, and Metro enthusiasts often rely on bake sales and pub quizzes to meet goals.

Support and engagement

Once registered, you’ll receive a personalized JustGiving link to streamline donations. Additionally, join our dedicated Facebook group for real-time updates, shared training plans, and photos of practice walks. As the event approaches, you’ll also be invited to a WhatsApp group for safety briefings and logistical details. Regular emails from the charity and event organizers Action Challenge will include start times, route specifics, and bib numbers, ensuring you’re well-informed throughout the process.
