McGregor injured 69 seconds into UFC comeback
McGregor’s Return Cut Short by Knee Problem Against Holloway
McGregor injured 69 seconds into UFC comeback – Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to mixed martial arts competition came to an abrupt halt at UFC 329, with the Irish fighter suffering a knee injury just 69 seconds into his bout against Max Holloway. This latest setback adds to McGregor’s recent struggles, as he has now lost each of his last three contests. The 37-year-old emerged from the corner throwing high kicks, but both attempts missed their mark, sending him to the canvas. Though he managed to rise, his unsteady movements prompted referee Mike Beltran to call off the fight as McGregor stumbled.
This marked McGregor’s first appearance in the octagon since suffering a broken leg during his loss to Dustin Poirier back in 2021. Holloway, meanwhile, was seeking revenge for his defeat against McGregor when the two first clashed in 2013. The victory pushes Holloway’s career record to 28 wins across 37 fights. Speaking after the contest, Holloway expressed confidence that a third meeting between the fighters was inevitable.
“You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway v McGregor 3 now,” Holloway declared. “It is what it is. I’ll sit down with the UFC. There was so much hype for that. We have to run it back one more time. We need one more.”
The former featherweight champion was competing in his welterweight debut at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. For McGregor, this loss represents his seventh career defeat and fourth in his last five fights, with only a single victory on his record since 2016. Critics have increasingly questioned whether the Irishman still commands the attention he once did, citing various off-mat controversies including legal proceedings and missed drug tests.
In November 2024, Nikita Hand secured a civil victory against McGregor in her assault by rape damages claim. Additionally, McGregor accepted an 18-month suspension last year for violating the UFC’s anti-doping regulations after failing three tests within a twelve-month span during 2024. The suspension, retroactively dated to September 2024, concluded in March.
Holloway’s Journey Through the Divisions
Despite the controversies surrounding McGregor, UFC executives remained convinced that the Irishman would continue to attract viewers and generate revenue without damaging the promotion’s reputation. The prevailing expectation was that McGregor needed to secure an early knockout to achieve victory, and he clearly shared this belief. His knee appeared to buckle when he missed his initial roundhouse kick attempt in the opening moments of the fight.
Holloway has headlined fifteen UFC events throughout his career. Since debuting as a twenty-year-old in 2012, he has cemented his status as one of the sport’s premier athletes and appears destined for eventual Hall of Fame induction. Known for never backing down from challenges, Holloway’s aggressive striking style and memorable finishes have earned him devoted fan support. His point-down knockout victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 received the distinction of “KO of the century” from commentator Joe Rogan.
However, McGregor’s earlier victory over Holloway has remained a persistent talking point. While Holloway expressed eagerness to “right the wrong” from thirteen years ago, the manner of this particular win may not fully satisfy that desire. Questions also persist regarding Holloway’s adaptation to the welterweight division, with answers still emerging.
Holloway has won twenty-four of his thirty-three UFC contests. He originally made his mark at featherweight, capturing the championship and dominating the division with a record-breaking thirteen-fight winning streak. Yet the era of easily making the 145-pound weight limit seems to be fading for the Hawaiian fighter, with only one of his last five bouts occurring in that division.
Currently ranked fourth in the lightweight division, Holloway has delivered some of his finest performances at 155 pounds despite never capturing that title. His 2024 victory over current lightweight champion Gaethje strengthens his case for a championship opportunity should he decide to move down a weight class. Remaining at welterweight could preserve the possibility of a trilogy with McGregor, though he remains unproven in that division and would face additional obstacles before entering title contention. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds whether McGregor will return to competition at all, making patience a risky proposition for Holloway.
