“Our casework is increasing across multiple ideologies, with an elevated threat specifically targeting Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions,” Taylor explained. “We’re also navigating an unpredictable global environment that influences physical threats closer to home, including those linked to state-backed actors.”

The threat level increase also aligns with broader concerns about Islamist and extreme right-wing extremism. Analysts suggest these ideologies are contributing to a surge in attacks against the UK’s Jewish community. The latest incident follows a series of targeted assaults, including a car ramming and stabbing attack in Manchester last October that left two people dead and three seriously injured.

Historical Context of Severe Threat Levels

Since February 2022, the UK had maintained a “substantial” threat level, but the recent developments have pushed it back to “severe,” the second-highest classification. This marks the first time the level has been raised since November 2021, when a bomb explosion near Liverpool Women’s Hospital and the murder of MP Sir David Amess led to the severe designation.

Analysts at the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) noted that the current threat level reflects a combination of factors, including persistent ideological extremism and the global instability affecting domestic security. The decision was made independently by security experts, without direct input from ministers, according to government statements.

Recent months have seen a pattern of attacks on Jewish communities across the country. In March, four Hatzola ambulances—owned by Jewish charities—were set ablaze in the car park of a Golders Green synagogue. Shortly after, the Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London was attacked, and a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through the window of Kenton United Synagogue. These incidents have raised alarms about the growing intensity of threats against religious and ethnic minorities.

The suspect in the Golders Green attack, Essa Suleiman, 45, is currently in police custody. He was arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, during the incident.
