Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’

US President Donald Trump has asserted that the trade agreement between America and the United Kingdom remains flexible, stating it “can always be changed.” During a conversation with Sky News on Wednesday, he emphasized that the deal was favorable, better than what he had to offer, according to his remarks.

Strained Relationship with UK Leader

Trump’s comments come amid ongoing tensions with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, whom he has consistently criticized since Starmer chose not to support the US-Israel conflict against Iran in late February. Despite this, Trump acknowledged that the relationship has “been better” in the past, though he expressed disappointment with recent developments.

“With who?”

When pressed for a description of the special relationship, Trump initially responded with confusion, asking “With who?” After clarification, he elaborated, “It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.”

Tariff Deal and Middle East Disputes

Earlier this year, the UK secured the first tariff agreement with Trump following his return to the presidency, reducing import duties on vehicles, aluminium, and steel. However, recent weeks have seen friction between the leaders over Middle Eastern policies, with Trump frequently labeling Starmer’s approach as lacking the strength of historical figures like Winston Churchill.

“No Winston Churchill.”

Trump also noted that while he “liked Starmer,” he found fault with the latter’s administration’s handling of immigration and energy strategies, calling them “insane.” Nonetheless, he insisted that these disagreements would not detract from the significance of the upcoming state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Anticipation for Royal Visit

Reflecting on the royal state visit scheduled for late April, Trump expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.” He added that the King’s involvement in the trade discussions was minimal, further reinforcing his belief that the relationship could be revised as needed.
