Trump endorses ex-UK political aide Steve Hilton for California governor

Donald Trump Throws Support Behind Steve Hilton in California Governor Race

The U.S. president, Donald Trump, has endorsed Steve Hilton, a former high-ranking advisor to the former British prime minister David Cameron, as a candidate for California’s governor. This move introduces a new dynamic into a highly volatile race within a state typically dominated by Democratic voters.

Endorsement Amid Democratic Dominance

Trump highlighted in a Truth Social post that the Republican contender, Steve Hilton, would “be a great governor.” He criticized the current Democratic administration, stating that “Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job” in California, with “people are fleeing” the state. The primary election is scheduled for 2 June, and the top two finishers—regardless of political affiliation—will compete in the general election.

Steve Hilton, who now resides in California, previously worked as a senior aide to David Cameron from 2010 to 2012. However, he later distanced himself from the Conservative leader’s policies, particularly on immigration. Since then, Hilton has hosted a Fox News show and remains active in conservative media.

Potential Challenges for the Republican Bid

Despite Trump’s backing, the endorsement might complicate Hilton’s path if he faces a Democratic opponent in November. Republicans have not secured a statewide victory in California since 2002, making this race a significant opportunity. Yet, the Republican field is split, with Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco also in the running.

Hilton, a visiting scholar at Stanford University since 2012, applied for U.S. citizenship in 2019. His campaign focuses on reducing taxes, streamlining state budgets, and lowering housing costs for families. Meanwhile, Democrats remain entrenched in state politics, though internal divisions have created a rare opening for Republicans.

Poll Results Spark Concern

A March survey by the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies disrupted the political status quo. The poll indicated that Hilton and Bianco had outpaced Democratic candidates, including Congressman Eric Swalwell, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire environmental advocate Tom Steyer. This led Democratic leaders to urge some contenders to withdraw, fearing a potential Republican upset.
