Tributes after British teenager dies while visiting Vietnam

A 19-year-old British woman, Orla Wates, has passed away in a tragic incident during her trip to Vietnam. According to local reports, she was involved in a motorcycle accident while exploring the Ha Giang Loop, a scenic mountain route in northern Vietnam. The accident reportedly occurred when she fell from the back of the vehicle, leading to her hospitalization in Hanoi. She was pronounced dead on 2 April, with her parents present at the time.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) shared its condolences, stating that it was in contact with local authorities and providing assistance to Orla’s family during this challenging period. Her mother, Henrietta Wates, revealed that the family opted to donate her organs, aiming to extend her legacy by aiding others in need.

“Orla was beautiful, independent, and very funny, with a sharp wit. She loved to look good and lived life to the full,” Henrietta shared with Viet Nam News.

Organ donations were made to five critically ill Vietnamese patients at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, as noted by the hospital’s representatives. A spokesperson highlighted the family’s decision as a “deeply compassionate act that transcended nationality and race,” emphasizing how Orla’s life continued through those who received her organs.

Orla’s father, Andrew Wates, expressed that her affection for Vietnam made the donation a meaningful gesture for the family. “Giving back to the South East Asian nation was very important to us,” he said.
