Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated that authorities have uncovered the motivation behind the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, a mother of US TV presenter Savannah Guthrie. While the motive is believed to be clear, no individual has been confirmed as the perpetrator. Nanos shared this with NBC News, stating, “we believe we know why he did this,” though he emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.

Kidnapping Timeline and Clues

Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, residence on 1 February. Despite a nationwide search that has yielded DNA evidence and ransom notes, the identity of the kidnapper remains unknown. The sheriff noted that the case is “targeted,” but the certainty of that conclusion is still pending. “We haven’t identified the person yet,” Nanos clarified, underscoring the complexity of the investigation.

“It’d be silly to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it. You’re not his target,'”

Nanos also highlighted the possibility of a repeat attack, urging vigilance in the affluent Catalina Foothills neighborhood. “Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe,” he warned, emphasizing the need for caution.

Savannah’s Public Appeals

Savannah Guthrie has actively engaged with social media to seek help in locating her mother. In a February video, she expressed concern, saying, “She may be lost, she may already be gone.” Additionally, she has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to her mother’s return.

Arrests and Detainments

Several arrests have occurred in connection with the case, though none have directly led to the kidnapper’s identification. A California man, detained for allegedly sending fake ransom notes, now faces federal charges. Another individual, a delivery man, was briefly questioned but released after being cleared by investigators.

To date, the only visual evidence of the suspect is a masked man captured on the doorbell camera outside Nancy Guthrie’s home. This image, combined with other clues, continues to guide the search for the perpetrator, who has yet to be named.
