Lindsey Graham’s sister chosen as replacement after senator’s death

South Carolina Senator’s Sister Named to Complete Brother’s Senate Term

Lindsey Graham s sister chosen as replacement – Following the unexpected passing of US Senator Lindsey Graham, his sister Darline Graham Nordone has been selected to occupy his Senate seat on an interim basis. The South Carolina lawmaker succumbed to an aortic tear over the weekend, prompting immediate calls for a replacement. Governor Henry McMaster officially announced Nordone’s appointment on Monday, describing her as Graham’s “darling little sister” who would “finish his work for him now”.

Nordone expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It is such an honour. Lindsey has always been there for me and now I will be there for him.” The selection comes after numerous public figures, including President Donald Trump, advocated for Nordone to assume the role in what they described as a fitting tribute to the senator. Graham, who remained unmarried throughout his life and had no children of his own, shared a particularly close bond with his sibling.

A Lifelong Bond Forged Through Tragedy

The relationship between the siblings was cemented during difficult times in their youth. After both of their parents passed away within fifteen months of one another, Graham, then twenty-two years old, legally adopted his thirteen-year-old sister. Nordone subsequently lived with various family members while maintaining a strong connection with her brother as he pursued his legal education and served in the Air Force.

In a 2015 interview with the New York Times, Nordone, who is a mother of two and works to assist individuals with disabilities in securing employment, reflected on their relationship. “He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one,” she explained. Graham later formalized their adoption, telling reporters that the arrangement would ensure Nordone received his military benefits in the event of his death.

Nordone has remained a constant presence throughout Graham’s political journey. At one point, the senator even indicated that she might serve as his first lady had he been elected president. Despite her long association with national politics, she has never previously held public office herself.

The Path Forward

According to Governor McMaster, Nordone will serve out the remainder of Graham’s term, which concludes in 2027. “Lindsey took care of his little sister,” McMaster remarked. “It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to finish his work for him now.” Nordone echoed these sentiments, expressing her belief that “this is what Lindsey would have wanted and I plan to honour him in this way”.

Neither Nordone nor the governor clarified whether she intends to campaign for the full six-year Senate term or serve temporarily until January 2027. Graham, who was elected to the Senate in 2002, was one of Washington’s most prominent voices on foreign policy, frequently advocating for American military engagement abroad. He had recently returned from a visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. The senator also spoke with Trump the evening before his passing.

Graham died at age 71 from an aortic dissection linked to cardiovascular disease, according to preliminary findings from the Washington DC medical examiner. His spokesperson noted that the death certificate would remain pending until all toxicological and microscopic testing is completed. At the time of his death, Republicans maintained a 53-47 majority in the Senate, with both parties competing for control in November’s elections.

Graham had secured the Republican Party’s nomination for re-election and several other candidates have already announced their intentions to run for his Senate seat. The appointment of a family member follows a longstanding tradition in American politics. According to the US House of Representatives in 2025, forty-five widowed women have directly succeeded their late husbands in Congress, with thirty-eight serving in the House and eight in the Senate.

“Lindsey took care of his little sister,” McMaster said. “It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to finish his work for him now.”

“It is such an honour. Lindsey has always been there for me and now I will be there for him,” Nordone said.
