The Moment of Impact

Williams described how the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle on the route and lost control, sending the bus careening downhill. The vehicle flipped several times, narrowly missing a tree, before landing on its side directly over Greta. The bus had windows without glass, and the girl was partially through an opening when the vehicle toppled onto her.

“Half of the bus was actually on her pelvis and hips, but her legs and body were inside the bus,” Williams recalled. “My partner was also through the window and he wanted to save my youngest daughter, so he was holding her up with all his strength.”

In the chaos that followed, passengers scrambled to right the overturned vehicle. Williams acknowledged that flipping a bus is not standard first-aid protocol, but said the sight of a child trapped underneath triggered pure instinct. Eiry-ana, still aboard, screamed believing her sister had died.

“It was just horrific,” Williams said. “My eight-year-old was screaming and she thought Greta was dead, she was panicking.”

The girl was admitted to The Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran, south Wales, where she began physiotherapy.

As of the time of writing, Greta is on strict bedrest and has been barred from walking or bearing weight. A medical assessment scheduled for 2 September will determine whether she can return to school. Williams described the recovery as a six-month journey to full independence.

“She was petrified when it happened. All she wanted was reassurance from me. We tried to keep it as positive as we could in the circumstances. She was phenomenally strong. I’m so proud of how she coped,” Williams said.

Jet2, which sold the original package holiday, waived the cost of rebooking Len and Eiry-ana’s flights back to the UK. The excursion operator, Tony Montana Excursions, was contacted for comment.

“This is something that’s going to haunt us forever. It’s going to take a long time to get over it all. We need normality to hit first, as we’re in the summer holidays, before we can process it properly,” Williams said. “You can see the accident has impacted them, and being in a foreign country has escalated their fears.”

Williams added that the family had been trying to fill the remaining days of the trip with as many positive memories as possible, framing the ordeal as a one-off freak accident rather than a pattern. Friends of Greta have rallied around her during her hospital stay, and Williams expressed gratitude for their support while stressing that the road ahead — both medically and emotionally — remains long.
