Four Teens Arrested Over Fatal Stabbing of 16-Year-Old Boy
Four teenagers have been taken into custody following the death of a 16-year-old boy after a stabbing incident. The attack occurred near the Ortongate Shopping Centre in Peterborough around 19:00 BST on Sunday. Police have set up cordons in the Riseholme area, and some floral tributes have been placed at the scene.
Investigation and Suspects
A 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both from Peterborough, were arrested on suspicion of murder. Two additional girls, aged 16 and 17, were detained for allegedly aiding the offender. The 16-year-old girl, who resides in March, Cambridgeshire, was also charged with possessing a sharp object. All suspects remain in police custody.
“This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a young man, and we are in contact with his family and keeping them updated,” said Det Ch Insp Richard Stott of the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit. He added, “While we understand the death will be concerning for local people, we do not believe this was a random attack and there will be a significant police presence in the area over coming days.”
Community and Local Reactions
Kirsty Knight, Independent councillor for Orton Waterville, described the event as “upsetting” after arriving at the scene shortly after the attack. She highlighted the community’s efforts to assist the victim, stating, “Our thoughts are with the young lad, his family and friends. We are incredibly grateful to those who stepped in to help, a reminder that care and compassion runs in our local community.”
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s Conservative mayor, Paul Bristow, called the incident “deeply tragic” and noted it is “not typical of Peterborough and our wider region.” He expressed support for the police response, saying, “I have spoken with Supt Ben Martin and have been reassured by the police response and the action being taken as the investigation into this appalling crime continues.”
Emergency Response and School Closure
The East of England Ambulance Service deployed multiple units, including two ambulances, three officer vehicles, a Hazardous Area Response Team, and a Magpas air ambulance response car, to the scene. A spokesperson confirmed, “A teenage boy was transported to hospital, but sadly died later in the evening. Our thoughts are with the boy’s family and friends.”
St John’s Church School informed parents via email that it would remain closed on Monday due to a “serious incident” nearby. The school stated it would “continue to monitor the situation” and provide updates on reopening. An image captured the substantial police presence at the Ortongate centre on Sunday night, though the shopping centre operated as usual, with the rear car park temporarily closed.
Residents are being asked to share any information or home CCTV footage with authorities. The case continues to unfold as investigators work to determine the full circumstances of the attack.
