Explosion at US embassy in Oslo may have been terrorism, Norway police say

Explosion at US Embassy in Oslo Could Be Terrorism, Police Hint

Norway’s police have indicated that an explosion at the US embassy in Oslo might be linked to terrorism, though they have not definitively concluded this. The incident, which occurred overnight, caused minimal damage to the embassy in the capital city but resulted in no injuries. Officials are actively examining the event, with further details emerging as the probe progresses.

“One hypothesis under consideration suggests the event might have been a terrorist attack, though it’s not yet confirmed,” said Frode Larsen, head of the police joint investigation and intelligence unit, during an interview with Norway’s public broadcaster NRK. He emphasized the need to remain open to alternative explanations for the blast.

Authorities have mobilized resources to investigate the cause of the explosion, which took place around 01:00 local time on Sunday (00:00 GMT). Police officers conducted searches near the embassy in the Morgedalsvegen district, roughly 7 kilometers from Oslo’s city center. They also urged the public to come forward with any information about the incident.

Earlier, the police noted that “large resources” were deployed to the area surrounding the embassy. “The police are in dialogue with the embassy, and no injuries have been reported,” the statement added, highlighting the ongoing collaboration with US diplomats.

Photographs circulating on social media later showed the aftermath of the blast, including broken glass scattered in the snow near the embassy entrance, cracks in a glass door, and dark stains on the tiled floor. Norwegian officials described the event as “unacceptable,” underscoring their commitment to protecting diplomatic missions.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide reiterated that “the security of diplomatic missions is very important to us,” following contact with the US embassy’s chargé d’affaires, Eric Meyer, regarding the incident.

The US State Department confirmed awareness of the explosion at its Oslo facility and is working alongside Norwegian authorities to determine its origin. While the exact cause remains under scrutiny, the potential for terrorism has been raised as a key possibility in the early stages of the investigation.
