Teen’s tragic e-bike accident sparks parental caution

Last Thursday, a 14-year-old named Finley Dawson was operating an electric motorbike when it collided with a Kia Sportage in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The crash occurred on Newbold Road around 8:30pm, sending both Finley and his 15-year-old pillion passenger onto the road.

Finley was transported to the hospital, but his injuries were deemed ‘non-survivable,’ resulting in his death the next day. His 15-year-old companion is still hospitalized in a critical yet stable state.

According to Derbyshire police, the Kia driver is considered a witness and is helping with the investigation. No arrests have been made so far.

Families issue warning about e-bike risks

The families have since released a statement highlighting the perils of e-bike usage on public roads. In a joint declaration, they emphasized:

‘There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life.’

They also noted:

‘His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate.’

The statement concluded:

‘Although the thrill of riding an electric bike on the road seems exciting, it can also be fatal.’

In the UK, riders must be at least 16 and possess a valid license to operate electric motorbikes on roads. However, pedal-assisted e-bikes can be ridden by individuals aged 14 and older on roads and cycle paths, provided their power output does not exceed 250 watts continuously.
