“They’ve tried to present as the perfect family, living in the perfect home, having the perfect lives,” said Det Ch Insp Andy Fallows, the senior investigating officer at Lancashire Police. “Instagram ready, aren’t they?”

Fallows highlighted how the couple’s social media feed, with its vibrant photos of Varley and his dog, obscured the turmoil within their household. “Everything’s on social media, everything is brilliant, and I think if you scrape away the veneer of that you come to something that is entirely different,” he explained. The court was told that while Varley appeared to be a dedicated educator, his role as a parent was marked by growing frustration and emotional strain.

The Adoption Journey and Initial Hopes

The couple met on Manchester’s Canal Street in late 2018 and quickly shared a vision of family life. By December 2021, they had embarked on the adoption process, and by January 2023, they were approved as foster parents. At the time, Varley was expected to take a year off work to care for Preston, a decision that reflected their commitment to creating a nurturing environment for the child.

Preston was immediately placed with foster parents just five days after his birth, a step that was meant to provide stability and safety. However, the transition to a permanent family was not without its challenges. The pair hosted a “Chosen Shower” to celebrate the adoption, complete with balloons, cake, and a wall mural of “Preston Elijah,” the name they selected for their son. This event symbolized their aspirations, but it also masked the dangers that lay ahead.

The Abuse That Led to Tragedy

As the months passed, Preston became a victim of relentless physical, sexual, and emotional mistreatment. His injuries, which included bruises, seizures, and respiratory distress, were non-accidental in nature, indicating a pattern of harm. Medical records revealed that the boy was hospitalized three times in the months before his death, each visit documenting worsening conditions.

Varley, who worked at South Shore Academy as a design and technology technician before becoming a teacher, was described in court as a self-proclaimed “Drama Queen.” His partner, McGowan-Fazakerley, was seen as the calm and composed “Steady Eddie” in their relationship. Yet, the pressures of parenthood began to take their toll. Messages shown to the jury revealed Varley’s struggle as a new father, including his admission of exhaustion and sleepless nights.

“How is being a father treating you?”, one message to Varley read on 17 April 2023. “It’s great. Exhausting and not having a decent nights sleep. I knew it would be hard but this is something else,” he replied. “He wakes up almost every two hours and has a screaming paddy which takes almost an hour to get him back to sleep xx.”

Varley also mentioned his anxiety and possible post-adoption depression, dismissing the idea that it was a genuine condition unless a doctor confirmed it. Despite these signs of distress, the couple maintained their facade, with Varley claiming that Preston had drowned in the bath during the trial. The jury ultimately found him guilty of murder, along with sexual abuse, and sentenced him to a whole life order—a permanent prison sentence unless extraordinary circumstances arise.

The Partner’s Role and the Legal Consequences

McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted, receiving a 25-year sentence for allowing Preston’s death, child cruelty, and sexual abuse. The court emphasized the couple’s shared responsibility, noting that their combined efforts created an environment where the child’s suffering could go unnoticed. “The picture they tried to present to the outside world was one of respectability,” Fallows stated. “The truth is far more sinister and darker than that.”

Varley’s career as a teacher, which included roles as a pastoral leader and head of year, contrasted sharply with the chaos in his home.
