France: Two New Arrests in Connection with Foiled Bank of America Attack

French authorities have detained two additional individuals linked to a thwarted assault on the Paris branch of Bank of America. The first suspect’s detention was extended, according to prosecutors. A day prior, police had already apprehended one person after an attempted bombing near the bank’s location. However, another suspect managed to flee the scene.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time (02:30 GMT) outside the Bank of America building, situated just a short distance from Paris’ famous Champs-Elysees. French AFP news agency reported that officers observed two men near the premises, carrying a shopping bag. One individual reportedly activated a device containing an ignition system and a liquid substance suspected to be fuel, moments before being arrested. His accomplice escaped.

Authorities discovered around 650 grams (23 ounces) of explosive powder within the device, which was sent to a forensic laboratory for further examination. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office of France, PNAT, confirmed an investigation into alleged terrorism-related charges. These include acts of arson, dangerous methods of harm, creation of explosive devices, possession and transportation of such devices with intent to cause damage, and involvement in a terrorist group.

“The swift action of the Paris police prefecture unit prevented a terrorist attack in the early hours of the morning,” stated Interior Minister Laurent Nunez in a statement posted on X. “Security forces remain fully alert,” he added, highlighting their readiness amid the current global situation.

According to an unnamed police source cited by AFP, the initial suspect was recruited through the Snapchat app to execute the bombing in exchange for €600, approximately $692. A Bank of America representative informed AFP of their awareness of the situation and ongoing communication with French officials.
