8 of the toughest game show questions of all time — how many can you get right?
Whether you adore or despise them, game shows remain a staple of entertainment, drawing millions of viewers to programs like The Chase, The 1% Club, and Only Connect every week.
Though few get to compete on these shows, the rest of us indulge by testing our knowledge at home, imagining we could outwit the participants. Yet, there are moments when even the most seasoned contestants falter, facing riddles so intricate that they leave both on-screen and off-screen audiences perplexed.
Here are some of the most challenging questions ever posed on television, testing the limits of common knowledge. How many can you solve?
The Chase: A Mathematical Enigma
One of the most formidable quiz shows, The Chase, has occasionally baffled viewers with its cryptic queries. In 2018, during an episode hosted by Jeremy Paxman, a question about Pascal’s Triangle left fans scratching their heads. The challenge was to identify the seventh row, given that the second row was 1, 1.
“We know, we’re stumped too,” the audience might have echoed, but the answer came swiftly from Jonathan Noble, a team captain at Newcastle University. He correctly responded with: “1, 6, 15, 20, 15, 6, 1.”
Even his teammate Adam Lowery seemed surprised by the accuracy of the response. The question, rooted in the work of French mathematician Blaise Pascal, required understanding how each number in the triangle is derived from the sum of the two above it.
The 1% Club: A 50% Puzzle with a Twist
The 1% Club is infamous for its brain-bending challenges, especially its final questions. In 2024, a seemingly simple 50% question sparked confusion. Contestants were asked to spot the word that couldn’t be formed from the letters in “conundrum,” with choices including “cord,” “norm,” “noun,” and “moon.”
“That’s the only time in this show’s history where more people used a pass than actually knew the answer,” remarked host Lee Mack, highlighting the unexpected difficulty.
The correct answer, “moon,” showcased the cleverness of the question, as it was the sole option not contained within the letters of “conundrum.”
The Chasers: A Name Change Conundrum
Despite their reputation for vast knowledge, the Chasers occasionally stumble. In 2020, a question about an actress’s stage name left the team puzzled. The query asked: “Actress Joyce Frankenberg is better known by what name?”
“We’d have been stumped by this one too,” admitted Victoria Coren Mitchell, the host, noting it was one of the rare instances where even experts failed to answer.
The answer revealed that the actress, Jane Seymour, was born Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg. She gained fame for roles in “Live And Let Die” and “Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman.”
Only Connect: A Confusing Visual Clue
Only Connect, a long-running BBC Two favorite, has also presented perplexing challenges. In 2021, a picture-based question left even the host speechless. Contestants had to deduce the final image in a sequence featuring 20 acres, 43 acres, and a combine harvester.
“Even if you knew that strange machinery was a combine harvester from the song, how would you know it goes ‘I’ll give you the key?'” Victoria Coren Mitchell questioned, expressing her bewilderment.
The answer was a key, referencing the lyrics of The Wurzels’ 1970s hit “I’ve Got A Brand New Combine Harvester.” While the Jukeboxers team guessed it correctly, Victoria remained unsure.
