Scott Mills was highest-paid BBC star before sacking

BBC’s Annual Report Reveals Scott Mills as Top Earner Prior to Departure

Scott Mills was highest paid BBC star – According to the broadcasting corporation’s most recent annual report, Scott Mills held the position of highest-paid presenter before his dismissal earlier this year. The 53-year-old radio personality received approximately £745,000 in compensation before his departure in March. This timing is significant because Mills was let go just days before the financial year concluded, meaning the reported figure represents nearly his entire annual earnings from the organization.

His exit followed revelations that he faced accusations related to historical sexual offences. During the course of a police investigation that began in 2016, Mills demonstrated full cooperation. The inquiry was ultimately closed in 2019 when prosecutors determined there was inadequate evidence to proceed with charges. Mills was never formally charged in connection with these matters.

Salary Comparisons and Industry Changes

Mills’ compensation in his final year marked a substantial increase from the £355,000 he received during the previous financial period. At that time, he split his time between hosting Radio 2’s afternoon programme for ten months and the breakfast show for two months. His predecessor, Zoe Ball, received more than £1.36 million during her inaugural year presenting the morning slot in 2019. However, her earnings gradually declined over her six years in the role, reaching just over £950,000 in her last complete year. This reduction meant the corporation saved roughly £200,000 when transitioning from Ball to Mills.

Ball has since departed Radio 2 for Greatest Hits Radio and no longer appears on the current salary list. Meanwhile, Sara Cox has assumed responsibility for the Radio 2 breakfast show, though the corporation has yet to confirm a permanent replacement for the teatime position.

Other Notable Salary Adjustments

For the past six years, Ball and former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker consistently occupied the top positions on the star salaries list. Both individuals left their respective programmes last year. Lineker departed following the sharing of an Instagram reel containing an antisemitic illustration, for which he issued an apology. He subsequently secured new contracts with both ITV and Netflix.

Upon Lineker’s departure, his Match of the Day role was divided among three presenters who receive considerably lower individual payments. Mark Chapman earned around £335,000, Gabby Logan received £290,000, and Kelly Cates was paid £215,000. Even when combined, these figures fall short of Lineker’s £1.3 million. It is worth noting that all three presenters’ salaries encompass various sports presenting responsibilities throughout the BBC, not solely their work on Match of the Day.

Other prominent earners included Greg James, Stephen Nolan, Vernon Kay, and Alan Shearer. Laura Kuenssberg experienced a slight pay increase, reflecting her Sunday morning programme, Weekend Newscast, and weekly BBC News website column. On Radio 4’s flagship Today programme, Justin Webb emerged as the highest-paid presenter at approximately £375,000 for hosting both that show and Americast. Nick Robinson saw his earnings decline by roughly £80,000 during a year when his co-hosted Today podcast concluded.

Television Licence Trends

The annual report also highlighted a decline in television licences, which decreased by 539,000 over the past year. Over five years, total licences sold have fallen by two million, dropping from 25.3 million in 2020-21 to 23.3 million last year.

The published salaries list does not capture the complete financial picture for BBC talent. Many household names such as Claudia Winkleman, Michael McIntyre, and Graham Norton are excluded because they receive payments through production companies rather than directly from the corporation. Similarly, Alex Jones, Romesh Ranganathan, and Lor are among those not appearing on the list.

Mills co-operated with a police investigation and was not charged.

The £745,000 listed in the report represents almost his full annual BBC earnings.
