Early Sunday morning, an angry mob descended upon Mondal’s residence, apprehended him, and delivered him to police custody.

Within hours of Mondal’s arrest, a sack containing the girl’s lifeless body was retrieved from a nearby pond. Media reports indicated that Mondal had guided law enforcement to the precise location where the body was found. “Had the police acted earlier, she could have been saved,” her relatives expressed, voicing their frustration with the initial response. The police subsequently amended their complaint to include charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, India’s comprehensive legislation addressing child sexual abuse.

The recovery of the body ignited widespread anger across Baruipur, where violent demonstrations erupted. A mob vandalized roads, shops, and a local railway station. During the chaos, a young man was beaten to death by the crowd—a tragedy that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later confirmed was an innocent victim.
