Guehi a doubt for Norway game and Rice ill with bug
England Squad Update: Guehi Fitness Concern and Rice’s Illness Ahead of Norway Clash
Guehi a doubt for Norway game – England’s defensive options are being closely monitored as the team prepares for their World Cup quarter-final encounter against Norway. Marc Guehi, who has featured in every single one of England’s five tournament matches so far, faces a crucial fitness test on Friday. The Manchester City centre-back will undergo assessment to determine whether he can overcome his hamstring issue and participate in Saturday’s crucial quarter-final fixture. The injury to Guehi came during England’s hard-fought 3-2 triumph over Mexico in the round of sixteen at the historic Azteca Stadium. While initial reports suggested the defender was merely experiencing muscular fatigue, further evaluation revealed a more specific hamstring strain. Despite this setback, Guehi remains hopeful about his chances of featuring against the Norwegian side.
If Guehi is unable to join the squad for training on Friday, his availability for the Norway match will come into serious question. The injury is not considered particularly severe, yet England manager Thomas Tuchel cannot afford to take unnecessary risks with his defensive lineup. This is especially true given the threat posed by Norway’s prolific striker Erling Haaland, who has netted seven goals throughout the tournament thus far.
Midfielder Rice Battles Sickness Bug
Declan Rice has been absent from training for a second consecutive day due to a sickness bug that has affected several members of the squad. The midfielder was already managing a neural problem that impacts both his hamstring and lower back region. This pre-existing condition has been made worse by the recent illness, adding another layer of complexity to England’s midfield planning. The coaching staff has implemented measures to prevent the bug from spreading further through the camp. Rice’s situation is being monitored closely, though there is optimism that he will recover in time for the quarter-final.
James Returns to Full Training
In positive news for Tuchel, Reece James came back to full training on Thursday for the first time since picking up a hamstring injury during England’s goalless draw against Ghana. Although the Chelsea right-back did not complete the entire training session on Thursday, he is expected to be available for selection against Norway, provided he experiences no negative reactions. James’s return is particularly timely given that right-back has been one of England’s most problematic positions throughout the tournament. The situation has been complicated by a combination of injuries and suspensions affecting multiple players in that role.
Jarell Quansah, who had started at right-back against Mexico, learned he would miss two games following his red card in the last-16 encounter. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Tino Livramento suffered a calf injury before the tournament even began. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah, who possesses the versatility to play at full-back, was subsequently called up to cover for Livramento. When all factors are considered, Djed Spence was potentially the only natural right-back option available for the Norway match before James’s return.
Konsa’s Versatility Shown in Mexico Victory
Guehi’s potential absence would leave Tuchel with several centre-back alternatives. John Stones, Dan Burn, and Trevoh Chalobah are all available to step in if the Manchester City defender is ruled out. The versatility of the squad was demonstrated during the Mexico match, where Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa successfully filled in at right wing-back. Konsa shared his experience of adapting to the new position during challenging conditions.
With the heat and everything and having to change positions, going to right wing-back with a man down, it’s not easy. You have to tuck in and then, when the ball gets switched, you’ve got to run out and try to stop crosses.
The Villa player acknowledged that the mental challenge was significant during the opening period of the match. However, he managed to adjust and contribute effectively to England’s victory.
I think the first 10 minutes mentally was tough because I was feeling it a little bit, but I had to find a switch and overcome it. John Stones kept pushing me. He even asked to swap positions, but I told him: No, don’t worry, it’s fine. So yeah, I had to find a switch. And thankfully I managed to find it just in time.
Konsa expressed his pride in the team’s performance and his willingness to play wherever needed.
Super proud of the boys and what we managed to achieve that night. I’ll always play wherever the manager wants me to play. As long as I’m on that pitch and helping the team, I’m happy no matter where I’m playing.
England now faces a critical period of preparation as they assess their defensive options ahead of what promises to be a challenging quarter-final against Norway and their seven-goal hero Erling Haaland.
