Crypto giant Binance hit by hack suspected to be largest in history
Binance Moves to Contain $6.3bn Crypto Security Breach
Constantvpn.com – Binance has begun an urgent containment effort after digital assets worth about $6.3bn (£4.7bn) were affected in a security incident that could rank as the biggest cryptocurrency theft ever recorded.
The exchange, the largest crypto trading platform in the world, says roughly half of the impacted assets have already been frozen with assistance from other companies in the sector. Binance has also pledged to reimburse users for losses connected to the breach.
Initial findings indicate that an attacker may have gained access through a compromised laptop used by an engineer. That access allegedly enabled unauthorised withdrawals, highlighting how a single compromised device can create major exposure even at a global financial platform.
Industry-wide response
Several major stablecoin issuers and crypto businesses have moved quickly to restrict funds linked to the incident. Tether and Circle said they had frozen a combined total of around $2.4bn.
Circle chief executive Jeremy Allaire said the company was tracking the potential Binance exploit closely and had blocked more than $800m connected to it. Circle issues USDC, one of the largest cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a value close to the US dollar.
“Closely tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance”
Tether chief executive Paolo Ardoino said his company had frozen about $1.6bn related to the suspected attack. Tether is the issuer of USDT, another leading dollar-pegged cryptocurrency.
“Protecting the industry and our partners is our main priority.”
World Liberty Financial, a crypto business linked to US President Donald Trump and his family, also said it had worked with partners to freeze stolen assets. Coinbase said its own exchange was not affected and that it was monitoring developments.
Freezing assets can slow an attacker’s ability to move or exchange funds, particularly when the assets are issued by centralised companies. However, a substantial quantity of the reportedly stolen digital assets remains under the attacker’s control, leaving tracing and recovery efforts far from complete.
North Korea-linked group suspected
Two blockchain analytics companies have linked the attack to TraderTraitor, a hacking group associated with North Korea. If confirmed, the incident would surpass the previous record-setting theft: the $1.5bn attack on crypto exchange Bybit in 2025.
TRM Labs said features of the Binance breach resembled prior operations tied to North Korean actors, including the Bybit case. Its global head of policy, Ari Redbord, described the event as an exceptional moment for the cryptocurrency industry.
“Watershed moment”
Chainalysis said it had “high confidence” that the North Korean group was connected to the theft. Eric Jardine, the firm’s Head of Research, urged exchanges to remain alert, noting that platforms holding vast pools of digital assets are naturally attractive targets.
Binance did not directly address questions concerning possible North Korean involvement. The company said it was coordinating with law-enforcement partners to identify those responsible and pursue accountability.
“We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice.”
Withdrawals paused while systems are checked
Yi He, Binance’s co-chief executive, thanked cryptocurrency issuers that helped immobilise assets as the response unfolded. She said withdrawals had been switched off while the exchange confirms that its environment is safe.
“Safety first: withdrawals are currently disabled until the environment is confirmed to be secure.”
The disruption relates to Binance.com. Binance.US, the separate and considerably smaller platform that serves US residents, said it had not been affected.
For customers, the pause on withdrawals is likely to be frustrating, but it is a common emergency measure after a suspected breach. Exchanges must establish whether attacker access remains active, identify affected wallets and systems, and prevent additional unauthorised transfers before normal activity can safely resume.
Market reaction and broader stakes
Concerns about a possible hack had circulated for hours before Binance confirmed the security issue. The alerts prompted a sharp reaction across crypto markets: Bitcoin fell by more than 4%, while Ethereum, Solana and other major digital assets also declined significantly.
The episode arrives at a consequential time for Binance. Founded in China in 2017, the company enables trading in a wide range of digital assets and is estimated to have more than 300 million registered users around the world. It has faced regulatory attention in multiple jurisdictions, reflecting its scale and influence within the industry.
In 2024, Binance said it held more than $160bn in assets under custody. That figure underlines the challenge facing major exchanges: they are vital gateways for users who want to buy, sell and store crypto, yet their concentration of assets also makes them high-value targets.
The reported scale of this incident will intensify scrutiny of exchange security practices, including internal access controls, employee-device protection, withdrawal safeguards and coordination with issuers able to freeze certain tokens. It also demonstrates a defining feature of modern crypto markets: while some transactions can be rapidly restricted through cooperation, recovery becomes more difficult once funds are transferred across multiple wallets, platforms or asset types.
Binance’s promise to cover losses offers an important assurance to affected users, but the incident is likely to remain under close watch as investigators seek to establish precisely how the attacker entered the system, where the assets moved, and whether more funds can be recovered.
